The National Organization of Social Security Claimants’ Representatives (NOSSCR) issued a press release last week honoring the anniversary of the Social Security system.
The Social Security system was signed into law by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1935, and encompasses Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
“SSDI benefits are very modest, and there are very strict requirements for eligibility – in fact, only 40 percent of those who apply are ever approved – but the importance of the program to the 8 million Americans who depend on it cannot be overstated,” Debra Shifrin, President of NOSSCR said in the release.
“As an advocate for people with disabilities I see people’s lives impacted by this program every single day: families who may lose a house because of mounting bills, a brother who feels like a burden when he asks family members to drive him to the doctor because he can’t pay for gas, a life-long contractor who now has to pay others to work on his house because he can’t physically do the work.” Shifrin said. “These are the real stories of the Social Security program.”
