People With Heart Disease Can Collect Disability

Beginning today, we are going to look at a couple of health problems that force people out of work and into receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits: heart disease and asthma. We get many questions about eligibility when it comes to these issues, so we would like to take the time to clear a few things up.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the US. Without proper blood flow, the heart stops after being deprived of oxygen. If you have suffered a heart attack or suffer from congestive heart failure, you may be entitled to SSDI benefits if the issue renders you unable to work.

If you have heart problems, you may have to show your documented medical history, including surgeries, stress test results and any imaging results in order to qualify for benefits. In most cases, the Social Security Administration (SSA) will attempt to get medical records from treating doctors and hospitals. People with severe heart conditions who suffer from chest pain or take prescription medications are initially more likely to qualify for SSDI benefits.

Sometimes, the SSA will deny benefits to people with heart disease because they believe that the conditions will not last more than 12 months or their conditions are not long-term health problems. This is why it is imperative that you work with an experienced Social Security attorney if you are going to apply for disability benefits.

In our next post, we will discuss some of the issues that SSDI applicants with asthma face.
