Tulsa Disability Lawyers Discuss When SSDI Recipients Move To Another State

On Wednesday we discussed applying for disability benefits in one state. What happens when a person is approved for benefits but then moves to another state? SSI and SSDI recipients pay attention. If you receive your monthly benefits through the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program, then your benefits should not be affected at all. If you receive benefits through the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program, your benefits may change after an interstate move.

If you receive SSDI benefits, make sure to contact the Social Security Administration (SSA) and update them with your new location. If your checks are deposited electronically, there should be no problem.

However, if you receive SSI payments, your state supplementary payment may change. This is a small amount that an individual state chooses to add to a resident’s monthly SSI payment, and it varies state-to-state. If your old state paid you a supplement but you move to one of the eight states that do not offer a supplement (or you move to one with a lower supplement), your monthly payment could go down. However, the state monthly income limit is heightened to account for supplements. If you move to a state without supplements, you may have less income to report.

Moving from one state to another can be complicated and exhausting.
