Keeping Your Address Up-To-Date For SSI Benefits

In today’s modern age, direct deposit eliminates the need for waiting for a social security income check to come in the mail. Unfortunately, this often leads to individuals not keeping their address up-to-date with the system, resulting in issues both with their benefits but with the legal system.

Much of the amount of money provided by Social Security Income, or SSI, is based upon the individual circumstances of the person receiving the benefits. This includes where in the United States the person lives or who the person may live with (such as family, children or roommates.) Without the correct address, the amount of monetary benefits cannot be properly formulated.

During the colder months of the year, some people often opt to move to warmer states. Though this is not uncommon, it is important that those who relocate for at least part of the year, to report their new address within 10 days of the month in which the individual moved. Failure to report a new address could result in a decrease of benefits, a requirement to pay back overpaid benefits and any additional monetary or legal penalties.

It should also be noted that though the Social Security Administration does have a website for change of address reports, it is not available for those who receive SSI and need to report a change of address. Those receiving SSI must instead call the SSA’s toll free number at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY: 1-800-325-0778) or visit their local SSA office.

Steve Troutman was able to get my short-term and long-term disability for me. Then Erin another lawyer for their firm got my Social security disability for me. Great people.
